Yangon, one of the fascinating cities in South East Asia, lies in southern delta region of Myanmar, lined by the Yangon River and Bago River, with the population of over 5 millions. It is the biggest city in Myanmar and was the formal capital until 2006 after ending the Burmese royal kingdom by the British in 1885.

Yangon is perhaps the last authentic example of an Asian tropical city still featuring its former colonial origins, huge parks shady trees and lakes and its religious monuments. Of those monuments, the most legendary, graceful and majestic of all, is the Shwedagon Pagoda built around 2500 years ago.
Yangon International Airport (Mingalardon Airport) and Mandalay International Airport are the main gateways and there are direct air-links connecting Yangon with Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, China, Taiwan, Qatar and Bhutan.
The Myanmar Airways International, Thai Airways International, Silk Air, Biman, Aerofloat, Air France , Air China (CAAC), KLM, Lao Aviation Airlines, India MB, Qatar Airways, PIA, Royal Brunei Airlines, MINippon Airways, JAL, MAS, Yangon Airways, EVA Pacific Cargo Service, Condor Airline, Druk-Air, Italian Airline Service, Air Bagan and Air Mandalay operate scheduled flights in and out of Yangon.
There are also border area tourism promotions in Myanmar. With a Border Pass, tourists from Yunnan have been allowed to enter Lweje, Namkhan, and Muse. Organized groups can travel to Yangon via Lashio and Mandalay. Day return Thai-Myanmar cross-border traffic is also allowed at Myawaddy, Three-Pagoda-Pass and Kawthaung. One still has to travel to reach Yangon from the destination.
When you visit Yangon, visiting Shwedagon Pagoda is a must. It is one of the most famous and interesting place to visit in Yangon. Sule Pagoda lies in the center of Yangon and can be easily visited. Other than pagodas, museums such as National Museum, Bogyoke Museum and Gems Museum display historical events of Myanmar.

The name “Mandalay” derived from Man-da-lar, means the centre of the Universe. The old name is Ya-da-nar-pu-ra, means “city of gems”. Mandalay is the last Royal city of Burmese king (1752-1885) and the second largest city in Myanmar with the population of about 1.3 millions.
It is the centre of the Myanmar culture, arts and crafts, Myanmar literature, music, dance, the core of the Buddhist learning as well as important trade centre in Myanmar, well known for the presence of significant monasteries, pagodas, temples, religious edifies and also for Mandalay palace. Mandalay still remains its old cultural traditions and it is home for the Myanmar handicrafts. It has been called “bicycle city” as bicycles are mainly used for transportation purposes; to their work or to their school, etc. Nowadays we should name it again “Motorcycle city” as so many motorbikes in the streets.
There is a variety of interesting things in Mandalay and ancient cities around, Amarapura, Iva and Sagaing. The travellers can enjoy the short boat trip along the Ayeyarwaddy to Mingun where the enormous Pagoda and the 3rd biggest bell in the world built.
With its shady trees, parks and beautiful lakes, it has been called the garden city of the east. The colonial buildings, different religious monuments and great Shwedagon Pagoda add Yangon to be a beautiful city.
Mandalay is the city of last Kingdom of Myanmar Dynasty before British took over. For this reason, it still has great importance as Myanmar's cultural heart. It is the second largest city in Myanmar is about 690 km north of Yangon; the former capital of Myanmar, with a population of nearly a million, relatively young dating back only a century. Today Mandalay neighbours the mountain regions of the Shan and the Kachin people, acting as the gateway to the north, and ultimately to China. It is the main market city for "Upper Myanmar' and a place for the hill tribes to gather and trade. Mandalay still has considerable cultural and religious significance and its Buddhist monasteries are among the most important in the country. About 60% of the monks in Myanmar reside in the Mandalay area.
Mandalay International Airport is the gateway. It takes about 12 hours by express coach and about 14 hours by train. Myanmar Airways, Yangon Airways, Air Mandalay and Air Bagan operate daily flights about one and half hours from Yangon.

Bagan is the biggest and one of the richest archaeological sites in south-east Asia with over 2200 monuments still standing, about 1000 are in ruins. There were originally 4446 monuments; temples, pagoda, monasteries, ordination halls, dotted in Bagan.
Once Bagan was the glorious and rich capital of the first Myanmar empire and 55 kings ruled over Bagan dynasty during 12 centuries. In 13th century, Bagan was destroyed by the Mongols and the city was broken up into several small kingdoms near Mandalay.
Today Bagan is world-heritage site and it is just a village with about 3000 inhabitants. They are living from agriculture and tourism. Bagan today is just a skeleton of the glorious past but this place, remaining thousand of ancient monuments, will bring you back 11th century and being in Bagan for a visit is really, really amazing.

The famous lake is one of the fresh water lakes in Myanmar serving the wildlife sanctuaries for breeding of water birds and resting place for migratory water fowl. How to get there
Mrauk U is the last capital of Rakhine in the north-west part of Myanmar, founded by King Mong Saw Mon in 1430. The ancient city is now deserted but the ruined temples form an impressive and extensive stone record of the kingdom. Once it was one of the important and powerful in the Indian Ocean. It is now an archaeological complex with several interesting monuments. Mrauk-Oo has a scenic and exotic beauty with great historical remains.
The region is dotted with dozens of pagodas and Temples. Not like in Bagan, Mrauk-Oo is situated in hilly region. The pagodas and temples are made of stone and most of them are built on the hillocks. The scenery of Mrauk-Oo is beautiful among the green hill change with valleys in a marvellous surrounding.
The city offers the visitor many chances to study the cultural and it can be claimed as the Open-air Museum of the arts and culture of the Rakhine people.
The town is reached by boat, about 5 hours boat trip from Sittwe where the airport is. Starting from Sittwe, capital of Rakhine State, along the Kaladan River on a private boat, you will arrive the Mrauk Oo archaeological part. The high-light of tour sites are:
Shitthaung Paya means “temple of 80000 images” in Burmese. It was constructed in 1536 by King Minbin. The temple is famous for its fortress and its portrait inside of the temple. It is the most impressive of the historical edifices. One can see the full of small images, scenes in sculpture which present the countries and common people portrayed in their costumes and hair style, traditional men boxing and wrestling, some girls dancing and playing, mythical birds, etc…
Bago is situated 80 km east of Yangon. It was once a seaport and capital of Mon kingdom, founded in 825 by two Mon brothers. According to the legend, it was just a small peace of island around 563 BC where the two birds perched, the female bird on the back of the male one. It became today the symbol of this city.
The small city is really bustling with the bicycle, tri-shawl, motorcycle, three-wheel motorcycle and horse-cart. And the different religious monuments are remarkable beside the main road such as, mosque, Hindu temple, Chinese temple, monastery and temple.
One can make a day return trip from Yangon or visit on the way to Golden Rock pagoda. It takes 1 ½ hours to get there.
